First of all, it is a classic hydromechanical ‘automatic machine’. Its difference lies in the fact that there is no direct connection between the engine and the wheels: each transmission has its own multi-plate clutch, and it breaks if you overload the car by towing. Over time, such ‘automatic machines’ received a sport mode, winter mode, an economical driving program, as well as the ability to manually shift gears. The main disadvantages of this species are its large weight and increased fuel consumption.
The next type is a CVT, a feature of which is that, unlike the classic ‘automatic’, it changes gears very smoothly, which is why it can constantly remove maximum power from the engine, maintaining the corresponding speed. But the drawback of CVT is its acoustics: the car accelerates on one note, which noticeably affects the psyche of the driver. Its advantage over the classics is fuel economy, as well as less weight and a slight increase in dynamic parameters.
This is followed by robotic ‘mechanics’ (MTA), which in its structure is a mechanical gearbox, and for control – automatic. The driving style is the same as on the ‘automatic’, and fuel consumption is significantly less than on the ‘mechanics’. The advantages of this box include light weight, low cost and profitability. Speaking about the minuses of the MTA, it is worth noting that if in a quiet mode of driving this box behaves quite well, then with a greater pressure on the gas pedal the switchings become very noticeable, in other words, when each next gear is engaged, the driver and all passengers get a kick in the back.
A two-clutch robotic transmission emerged from the sport. One clutch in it is responsible for odd gears, and the second for even ones. During the ride, the torque is transmitted over one clutch while the second is set to the next gear. When the electronics understands that it is time to switch, the first clutch disc opens, and the second clutch disc, respectively, synchronously closes. Such a box works much softer and smoother than a conventional robotic automatic transmission, but its price is much higher.
And the last type is the cam gearbox used on sports cars. This transmission is essentially mechanical, there is even a clutch pedal, though it only works at the start. Further switching occurs without squeezing it. The main advantage of this type of “automatic” is that it can change gears in just 0.15-0.20 seconds, which is extremely important for riders. The disadvantages include a very high cost, noise and a complete lack of comfort when switching.
