Driving in limited visibility
Almost ninety percent of the information necessary for safe driving is provided by the driver through his vision.
This implies the conclusion that good visibility is the most important condition for trouble-free driving. With a sharp change in lighting conditions, our eyes need some time to restore their performance.
It is not necessary to be a driver in order to understand how a bright flash of the high beam of an oncoming car hits the eyes during a night trip along an unlit highway. Turning the high beam on with the oncoming car blinds the driver for a while. Even with a slight glare, the process of restoring the driver’s vision lasts about ten seconds. During this period of time, a car traveling at a speed of 60 km / h covers a distance of 170 meters. Pedestrians, cars, and other obstacles may be in this area of uncontrolled traffic. However, there are also some light signals between drivers, which, on the contrary, are capable of traveling on difficult sections of the road.
Blinded by the headlights, the driver for a while does not see anything and, accordingly, is not able to safely control his car. The best way to avoid being blinded by headlights of oncoming cars is to exclude driving at night and in poor visibility conditions if possible. If there is no other way out and you need to continue on, you must refrain from turning on the light in the passenger compartment.
Even a small flame of a lighter can for some time disable the driver’s vision.
It is well known that the better the road is lit, the greater the brightness of the headlights of oncoming cars are able to withstand the eyes of the driver. Indeed, the driver’s eyes get used to certain conditions of road illumination, and the weak dipped oncoming traffic can no longer do them serious harm, except for driving in the rain. A variety of methods are used to amplify the headlights, such as installing reflectors and special lenses in the headlight design, as well as using halogen lamps instead of conventional incandescent lamps.
However, it is not enough to have modern headlights. In addition, they must be correctly and accurately adjusted, otherwise the light will be scattered in different directions, and the driver will see everything except the road and the curb.
Do not forget that the behavior on the road reveals the cultural level of the driver. When driving in conditions of poor visibility, motorists have an unwritten rule to switch the high beam headlights to low. Unfortunately, everyone periodically has to deal with such unfortunate drivers who forget about this wonderful rule..
