Ford found that 40% of Russian motorists regularly hangover
In a Ford poll, 40% of Russian motorists admitted that they regularly drive a hangover *. Moreover, 13% of respondents do this only after the holidays.
60% of drivers said they never drive after drinking alcohol the day before, but 2% are “stuck” with a hangover only after an accident.
According to a study by Brandwatch, a company specializing in monitoring social networks, Sunday is the most “hangover” day of the week in the world, and the time when the hangover is particularly acute is 11 a.m. Based on the analysis of tweets, the company called January 1 ** the first “New Year’s Day,” which is especially widely celebrated in Russia, as the most “hangover” day in the world.
Researchers invited by Ford analyzed social media posts and found that for Europe, December 14 is one of the most “hangover” days before the holidays. Among the posts of users from France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK, the hangover was mentioned twice as often as at the beginning of the month on this day, the topic was featured in 5% of all discussions.
Ford commissioned a study to remind about the dangers of driving the day after the “libations” when many drivers are still under the influence of alcohol. For example, in the UK, every tenth arrest for driving while intoxicated occurs between 6 and 8 in the morning ***.
Even if the alcohol level in the driver’s blood in a hangover state is below the statutory limit, it can pose the same risk as a “officially” drunk driver, as people who drank the day before probably did not get enough sleep and their reactions were slowed ****.
“It is impossible to accurately say exactly how much time must pass to sober up the next morning. But it definitely takes longer than many people think, ”said Charli Brunning, a spokesman for the Brake charity, whose work is aimed at improving traffic safety. – If on a holiday you drank alcohol or drank late in the evening, the blood alcohol content may exceed the allowed limit the whole next day, so it is better to think over alternative ways of transportation in advance. It has been proven that even small doses of alcohol or drugs increase the risk of getting into an accident. You can lose not only rights – someone can lose their lives ”.
Ford is trying to convey this message to drivers with the help of unique equipment designed specifically for the global social program Ford Driving Skills for Life (Ford Academy for Driving Safety in Russia), which helps novice drivers to gain safe driving skills. Program participants are invited to try on a “hangover costume”, developed with the participation of specialists from the famous Meyer Hentschel Institute, Germany. It weighs more than 17 kg and consists of a special vest, weights for the ankle and wrist, headset, glasses and headphones. These elements mimic typical hangover syndromes – fatigue, dizziness, throbbing headache and problems with concentration.
“Driver education programs have made social driving unacceptable at night just after drinking,” said Ford Driving Skills for Life program manager Jim Graham. – But it practically did not affect driving in the morning in a state of hangover. “A hangover suit” shows how destabilizing a hangover can be, and also helps to understand the risk that others have while driving in this state “.
Among those who tested the costume was Dr. Richard Stephens (Richard Stephens), a senior professor of psychology at Keele University (UK), an alcohol specialist specializing in hangover.
“People often don’t understand the extent to which a hangover affects their ability to do anything,” Stevens said. “The Hangover Costume helps convey this idea in the best possible way.”.
