How to “Light”
Winter is coming, which means frost. From frost, old and low-capacity batteries (even on new machines) can run out. When the old or low-capacity battery runs out, the machine stops starting. How to start a car with a landed battery without breaking wood, read this article.
“Light” makes sense only if the machine is working. That is, the engine starts normally, there is fuel in the tank, only the electricity has run out. For example, you forgot to turn off the lights in the cabin in the evening. If the battery is exhausted after long unsuccessful starting attempts, then “lighting” will not save you – first you need to eliminate the reason why the engine does not start.
For “lighting” choose a car with a motor of close displacement. It is unlikely that it will be possible to get a five-liter jeep from Oka. Diesel engines stand alone – they require significantly more power when starting up! Their owners should expect help only from “brothers”.
The process is called “lighting” for a reason – it is fire and explosive. Therefore, burning cigarettes, matches, lighters – remove. Since the work is carried out with electricity, all conductive accessories – rings, bracelets, watches with a metal strap – too. First you need to get the wires for “lighting”, deploy them and check the insulation. Cracks are unacceptable! We’ll have to play “tag” – put the car “donor” so that the wires reach the terminals. At the same time, the engine of the donor car cannot be turned off.
When choosing wires for “lighting”, pay attention to the cross section of the conductors and the quality of their termination in the connectors. The cross-section of the wires must be at least 16 mm2, and the connection of the “crocodiles” with the wire is soldered.
The wires are color-coded: red is used to connect to the positive terminals of the batteries, black or colorless to negative. First, we connect the red wire connector to the positive terminal of the battery of the donor car. Then – to the plus of the battery of a dead battery. Red wire for “plus” Colorless wire for “minus”
The “Crocodile” of the negative wire is first connected to the negative terminal of the working battery, then to any massive unpainted body part or engine of your car. It is better if there is an unpainted place directly on the power unit – for example, an eye for hanging the motor, power fasteners of the cylinder block, engine mounts, etc. But you cannot hook the crocodile to the negative terminal of the battery.
It is worth waiting 5-10 minutes for the “donor” to recharge the battery. This will reduce the load on his electrician at the time of start-up and will avoid excessive heating of the wires for “lighting” and their connectors, as well as reduce the effect of transitional resistances on the process of starting the motor. The key to start – and start the car. Then we remove the wires in the reverse order. It is better not to turn off the reanimated engine for at least the next 10-20 minutes. This will allow the battery to store energy for the next start..
BE CAREFUL! At high currents (starter discharge, a charge of several tens of amperes), the battery emits explosive gas – a mixture of hydrogen and oxygen. The slightest spark can lead to an explosion with the destruction of the battery case and the release of sulfuric acid.
