When it comes to fuel economy, motorists are divided into three camps: those who do not care, others who periodically think about it and still others who do their best every day to reduce their fuel costs. And sometimes it comes to the point of absurdity!

At the same time, too high pressure, although it reduces consumption, reducing the contact patch with the road and increasing the speed, noticeably worsens the grip. The condition of the air filter is very important for fuel economy. With a clogged filter, the engine becomes hard to “breathe”, the quality of the mixture deteriorates and the flow rate increases. Due to the poor mixture, the car stops “driving” and you push the gas harder, which also does not contribute to fuel economy.
Using the right engine oil with the viscosity set by the factory allows you to keep the flow rate within reasonable limits. Let’s say your car needs 5W-30 viscosity oil, and you filled 5W-40. Yes, a high viscosity protects the motor better, however, the consumption in this case will certainly increase. And if you pour viscosity 10W-60 into the engine, then the increase in consumption will be quite felt even within every hundred kilometers traveled.
Back in the mid-2000s, when only in most European countries they introduced compulsory driving with the headlights on, meticulous burghers considered that when the dipped beam was working, the consumption increased by 2-3 percent. And this applies to any additional electrical equipment in the car. The difference is only in the volume of energy consumption, and it is especially noticeable if you hang additional – not factory – bells and whistles on the car.
Riding with open windows
It’s nice to drive in a car with windows open, isn’t it? However, this significantly affects your wallet. And if while driving in traffic jams, an open window does not affect the flow rate in any way, then with increasing speed the flow rate becomes higher and higher. This happens as follows: air flows entering the interior slow down the car, and to maintain speed you have to put more pressure on the gas – hence the increase in consumption.
To understand how air conditioning affects consumption, we briefly recall its device. The air conditioning compressor is driven by a belt drive directly from the crankshaft pulley. When the compressor is turned on, the clutch in it closes and freon begins to circulate through the system, cooling the air entering the cabin. However, this process is extremely energy consuming. And if on cars with large and powerful motors the inclusion of an air conditioner has practically no effect on efficiency, then on cars with small engines the consumption can increase by 10 percent. In addition, with a full air conditioner, power drops significantly.
Parking in the sun
Try to leave your car only in the shade in the summer. And when you park the car under the scorching sun, be prepared for the fact that gasoline, when heated, will evaporate rapidly. In addition, an overheated cabin will require increased operation of the air conditioner, and this, as we found out a little earlier, leads to an additional load on the power grid, generator and, consequently, the motor, which also entails an increase in fuel consumption.
Low quality fuel
How many stories have we heard from those traveling by personal transport to Europe that local gasoline consumption immediately drops by 5-15 percent. And it is true. On modern cars there is such a thing as a lambda probe. This sensor reads information about the quality of exhaust gases and transmits information directly to the car in the electronic engine control unit (abbreviated ECU or simply “brain”). If the quality of the fuel is low, then the “brain” gives the command about the need to enrich the air-fuel mixture. As a result – increased fuel consumption.
But another reason for the drop in fuel consumption in Europe is a more measured pace of movement. There are fewer traffic jams, and those that are usually flow more smoothly – no one twitches or rebuilds. Yes, and no one goes on the highway +40, which means the engine runs at optimal speed and requires less fuel.
It is logical to assume that a technically faulty car will consume more fuel, but not everyone thinks about it. Incomplete combustion of fuel due to old candles or “broken” spark plug wires, clogged catalyst, severe wear of the engine piston group, low oil level in the transmission, and much much more. In general, it is much more profitable to keep the car in order than to overpay for fuel. Yes, and nicer.
