Preparing for winter chassis, brake system and transmission

How to prepare a car for the cold.

A frosty day, light snow sprinkled on the road and pits on it. Not fitting into a sharp turn, the car goes into a skid, gets into a pothole and finds itself somewhere on the side of the road with a flat tire. This is at best. And at worst – with a bent disk and a broken support. Common situation? Undoubtedly. Indeed, almost every motorist has been in such “adventures”. Of course, in many respects the reason for such situations is bad weather and difficult road conditions. But if the chassis of the car is carefully prepared for the winter, the degree of injury to the car will be much less. And it’s even lucky to “steer” unscathed.

Running inspection

Drive a car before the onset of cold weather in the pit and fully check the “hodovka” – this is the commandment of any driver. It doesn’t matter if he drives a brand new Mercedes-Benz, or a well-known Tavria. An auto mechanic must check the angles of the front wheels, the stiffness of the springs, the condition of the springs, struts and shock absorbers, the wear of the brake discs and brake pads, diagnose the steering gear (levers, traction), and also make sure that the tires are not “bald”, but the wheels – not deformed. If there are complaints about any of the spare parts, it is very advisable not to save and replace (for example, pads or shock absorbers). But even when everything is in order, for safety reasons it will not be superfluous to do the alignment and balance the wheels.

Brake discs and pads

Particular attention should be paid to the brake system. First of all, brake discs and pads. Depending on the model of car, operating conditions and driving style, their resource ranges from 60 to 90 thousand km. When the discs are worn out, characteristic edges are formed at their edges, which literally “kill” the brake pads. In addition, there is a “beating” of the brake pedal while pressing it (especially when you need to brake quickly and sharply). Pads go even less – 20-30 thousand km. A sign of their development is a thin piercing creak during braking, as well as a sluggish reaction of the car to the brake pedal in principle. By the way, when the car’s mileage is about 100 thousand km or more, then with a high probability, along with the pads, it will be necessary to change the calipers.

Brake fluid

How the car will behave on the road and respond to the brake pedal also depends on the brake fluid. Manufacturers recommend pouring it every 30-40 thousand km, or at least once every two years. Does the car slow down badly? Reluctant to listen to the brake pedal? Also a clear sign that brake fluid should be changed. Replacement may also be required if brake fluid leaks. To find out, during the diagnosis at the service station it is necessary to measure its level. If on the anthers of the brake cylinders there are obvious traces of brake fluid, then the depressurization of the system is obvious. Therefore, for starters, it is necessary to eliminate the problem and eliminate the “leak”, after which it is already necessary to fill in a new liquid.

Transmission

Together with the undercarriage of the car, it is very important on the eve of winter to take care of the impeccable operation of the transmission. It is not in vain that owners of cars with a “mechanical” gearbox call the clutch a second brake, which often helps to avoid emergency situations. So, if there are even the slightest complaints about the transmission (the transmission is “stuck” badly, the clutch is jerky, etc.), we undergo a thorough “examination” by the auto master, and at the same time we change the oil in the box, since it prolongs life its details and saves the car owner’s budget from expensive repairs.
