Experts told what threatens to ride on the “reserve”
In the spring, broken roads become unpredictable, and each pit threatens with a loss of tire integrity. A spare tire in our area is as necessary as a head on shoulders. But what will happen if you put one “dokatka” or “spare tire” with a summer tread on a set of winter tires?
Most modern cars come off the assembly line fully equipped with a full-fledged spare tire or a “dokatka”. By default, they are equipped with summer or all-weather tires. According to Nokian Tires tire experts, the consequences of riding such a wheel in the winter season can be sad.
Many drivers of modern cars are accustomed to relying on modern technologies that control the torque between the wheels in cars, but with poor quality road surface the system can easily fail. Lack of uniform grip on wheels threatens to lose control of the machine.
If the spare wheel is mounted on the front wheel, during intensive braking, the car will begin to turn around the wheel with better grip. The process develops very quickly and leaves very little time for reaction, so even experienced drivers risk traveling far beyond their lane.
If the spare wheel is mounted on the rear wheel, when braking and especially when cornering, the unloaded rear axle of the vehicle can skid. In the case of front-wheel drive cars, the skid is adjusted by aligning the steering wheel and adding gas, if the drive is rear, it will be much more difficult to catch the car.
Increased stopping distance
In the fight against the above effects, the driver will be helped by the ABS system and the stabilization of the car. However, their help will have a side effect – a significant lengthening of the braking distance of the car, especially if there is snow or ice under the wheels.
If, however, the driver of a front-wheel drive or four-wheel drive car has to use a summer spare wheel or a dokatka, it is better to put it on the rear axle – even if the front wheel bursts and this means twice as much work. Drive carefully, at a low speed, do not make sudden movements with the wheel and brake smoothly before turns. And as soon as it becomes possible to repair the tire or put a new one – do it immediately.
For a rear-wheel drive car, the use of a summer spare tire in winter conditions is generally not recommended: when installing in the front, there will be problems with stability on braking, when installing in the rear – with a drive during acceleration.
Ideally, regardless of the type of car drive, owners are strongly advised to take care of selecting tires for a spare tire for the season. Only in this way can you guarantee yourself that there are no problems with handling in difficult driving conditions on winter Ukrainian roads.
