Description
The 4WD Part-Time models were equipped with a DPS system, which consists of a hydraulic coupling and differential mounted in the housing of the rear gearbox (rear axle gearbox). In normal condition, the car is front-wheel drive. However, depending on the torque supplied to the front wheels and the condition of the road surface, part of the torque may be supplied to the rear wheels. All-wheel drive is connected automatically, without driver intervention. The switching mechanism between 2WD and 4WD is integrated in the rear gear housing to make the system compact and lightweight.
In addition, the system disables all-wheel drive in the event of vehicle braking while driving forward. This allows you to ensure the correct operation of the brake system on cars equipped with ABS.

Design
The rear gearbox consists of a body of a four-wheel drive connecting mechanism with a mechanism and a rear gear housing with a differential. An all-wheel drive coupling coupling, a flange and a pump housing are installed in the housing of the all-wheel drive connection mechanism. The following gears are mounted in the rear gear case: differential with driven final drive gear and final drive gear.
In the pump housing are: front pump, rear pump, clutch and piston. The piston is spring-loaded to reduce noise from elements of the full-water connection mechanism.

– accelerated backward movement (if necessary);
– reverse braking.
The all-wheel drive connection mechanism does not connect the four-wheel drive in the following cases:
– movement at a constant speed;
– forward braking.
To prevent damage to the connection mechanism, a working fluid is constantly supplied to the clutch and components, regardless of whether the four-wheel drive is on or off. The system also has a temperature switch that disables all-wheel drive if the temperature of the working fluid in the rear gear exceeds the permissible value.

System operation under various modes of car movement

Drive off or accelerate forward (4WD)
In these modes, the system can connect four-wheel drive. If the front wheels rotate faster than the rear, then the performance of the front pump will be greater than the performance of the rear.
The working fluid flows to the front pump through valve “B”. Part of the working fluid pumped by the front pump enters the rear pump. Another part of the fluid through the valve “E” enters the piston of the coupling. The piston moves and compresses the plates and discs under the influence of fluid pressure.

Temperature switch operation
During operation of the system in 4WD mode, the working fluid in contact with the system parts is heated. To prevent overheating of the working fluid and system elements, a temperature switch is installed. When the temperature of the working fluid rises above the permissible value, the stem of the circuit breaker moves to the right in temperature (in the figure) and opens the safety valve “R”. A pressure relief valve protects the system from excessive pressure buildup to the piston. When the pressure exceeds a certain value, the safety valve “R” opens and bleeds part of the liquid.
