Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X
Over the 23-year history, namely, so many years ago in 1992, the first model appeared, the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X can rightfully claim not to be the next step in evolution, but to attempt an revolution. And this is due not only to the progress in many elements of the car, but also to the policy of the company, which reoriented the new Evolution X model, moving away from the image of a sports car and challenging the giants of the global automotive industry Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, Audi, BMW. What will come of it – time will tell. However, unlike marketing specialists, the results of whose efforts can be known only with time, the work of Mitsubishi designers and designers can be evaluated now.
So, the first thing that catches your eye, and this is confirmed by the technical data of the Evolution X, is that its dimensions have become slightly larger in all respects. And, of course, the new distinctive appearance of the car, although there are still signs of a sports car: a spoiler, air vents, wheel arches – all this combination of aesthetics and technical perfection looks quite original and impressive. In general, the appearance of dozens alone convinces of the unique capabilities of the Japanese. Evolution X has become more aggressive, the front view is the gaze of the samurai, something enchanting and warning at the same time. But on the road, the driver in front will not have the opportunity to consider the “Japanese” in the review of the rear-view mirror. Almost perfect aerodynamics, which is inherited by Lancer Evolution, the magnificent “fighting” capabilities hidden under the hood will not leave many chances. And without having time to make out the “face”, you can enjoy the excellent rear view of the “evik”, something reminiscent of Alfa Romeo. And again, the harmony of aesthetics and technical “tricks” is at its height: the usual diffusers for venting the air escaping from under the bottom, two equally-symmetrically arranged exhaust pipes, a rally spoiler. And here we come to the first small flaw of the new Evolution model – the trunk. Going beyond the usual model, a dozen is the first attempt to reorient, this can explain some of the design flaws. The smart audio system, the battery located at the back, the hole for pouring water into the sprayer does not leave much space, and the absence of fixing straps for the bags (the car is still fast enough) and an internal handle to close the trunk makes the trunk in general not very comfortable.
So we went to the salon. External austerity was continued in the cabin, however, with all the severity, the design and technical equipment of the cabin allow you to get the most out of your ride. The increase in the total length of the Lancer allowed the rear passengers to feel more relaxed. The cabin has a lot more electrics: electronic seat adjustment (unfortunately, there is no height adjustment, as well as seat heating), which are made in a sports style with lateral support – from Recaro, a navigation system, a chic speaker system. The steering wheel, which has a “feel like a racer” unique for Mitsubishi manual gearshift lever, also has no adjustment, which, together with an unregulated height seat, creates some difficulties in choosing the optimal posture for riding. As in earlier models, the panel has nothing more. In order not to frighten the passenger, the speedometer with the highest number 300 (maximum speed two hundred and fifty kilometers per hour) is reliably drowned and visible only to the driver.
Well, just right to talk about the technical capabilities of the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X. Four-wheel drive, a unique transmission with two clutches has a 6-speed automatic transmission and a 5-speed manual.
It is worth paying attention to the steering: in addition to all-wheel drive, the sporty ABS system, ASC stabilization, AYC torque control and ACD differential provide safe handling. The Evolution X multi-link suspension has optimized geometry and the car behaves superbly when driving on rough roads. The tenth model has a modified gasoline turbo engine of slightly less than 300 hp. with a volume of about 2 thousand cubes, more than 7000 vol. to the redline. Significant modification allowed to reduce engine weight, achieve a more compact arrangement, and changes in the turbine design allowed to reduce acceleration time – now one hundred kilometers per hour in 6.3 seconds. The disadvantages include the noise of the engine, which is a hereditary sign of a racing car.
The comfort of movement makes the new Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X convenient both for a city where gas consumption is 13.9 liters, and on the highway – 8.5 liters, with a tank volume of 55 liters.
In general, the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X retained speed and gained comfort. Will the anniversary model compete on equal terms with premium brands? Time will tell.
