Eternal discussion on whether to warm up the engine in winter?
Diametric opinions of experts on this issue are puzzling.
With the advent of cold weather, motorists ask themselves: “is it worth it to warm the car in winter”? And what is the best way to warm up – on the move or in place? In this article, if we do not understand this issue, we will at least find out the opinions of specialists.
Pros and cons of warming up the car in winter
Many proponents of warming up the engine claim that a cold motor is more susceptible to mechanical wear. But, opponents of the program, agree with this only partially, arguing that after testing an engine not warmed up, noticeable wear was not noticed. This is because the cold engine is in motion, i.e. under load, warms up faster and reaches its optimal operating mode.
Why do many motorists continue to warm the engine in the winter? Some practicing mechanics believe that this is just a habit and experience of bygone years. In the past, a cold engine had to be warmed up to reduce wear. But today, with the growth of technology, the need for prolonged warming up of the engine has disappeared due to uselessness. All modern engines (meaning not the Soviet automobile industry) warm up quickly than carburetor ancestors, prolonged engine warming is an excess of the past.
Also, opponents of engine warming up in winter give two arguments in their favor: these are environmental standards and fuel consumption. Let’s imagine with you that the car owner warms up the engine every day for 10-15 minutes. This is how much expensive gasoline goes into the exhaust pipe, and just like that? It is worth noting that when warming up in place, spark plugs suffer. At the time of engine warming up, the air-fuel mixture is re-enriched, i.e. a large amount of gasoline appears in it. And this leads to the gulf and, consequently, to an early replacement of candles.
And although almost 40% of practicing mechanics think so, nevertheless one can argue with such an opinion.
How a car drives on a cold engine?
The question remains: how does the car ride on a cold engine? Modern cars are equipped with an injection system that independently changes the parameters of the motor, depending on its settings at the moment. i.e. all the rough work of warming up the engine, according to the logic of things, electronics will do for you.
The only thing that experts agreed is that when driving on a cold engine, you do not need to spin the engine to its maximum speed and try not to give it maximum loads. This is necessary for heating process fluids: oils, lubricants and fuel.
