In addition, when the air pressure is too low, the tire shoulders are subjected to increased load, wear is uneven and too high. Filling pressure also influences rolling resistance due to deformation, which depends on the pressure in the tires and the work of collapse. As a result, air pressure has a significant effect on fuel consumption. Numerous studies have shown that most of our cars drive with too low tire pressure. In this case, it is enough to glance at the operating instructions in order to find out and get free access to the device for inflating tires at a gas station. For these devices, accuracy is often higher than expected, they are regularly checked. Tire pressure is of particular importance if different values ​​are prescribed depending on the changing load or speed. This applies mainly to high-speed cars, but still not only to them. In doubtful cases, it will not be a mistake to travel for a long time at the higher of the prescribed air pressure indicators. The result most often is a slight decrease in comfort, in rare cases this can lead to uneven wear, while the middle of the tread is subjected to a higher load. And one more thing: it is recommended to increase air pressure in winter tires, as a rule, by 0.2 bar compared to the pressure indicator in summer tires, exceptions are given in the operating instructions. The customer service department of the car manufacturer provides information at any time and specifically on this topic.

Checking the air pressure in the tires should be carried out at intervals of approximately 14 days, while the tires should be cold. The heating that occurs all the time during the trip increases the tire pressure, which in no case can be lowered. If necessary, a spare tire must also be subjected to this test, in which the pressure should be 0.5 bar higher than the maximum required air pressure in the studs on the car – in extreme cases, it is not difficult to bleed air. In this case, valve caps should not be clogged. They protect the valve from dust, dirt and water; it retains tightness longer. And if, when checking the pressure, noticeable differences in performance are constantly obtained, perhaps even in only one tire, then something went bad. In this case, it is recommended to consult a tire specialist, as There is a suspicion of damage to the tire, valve or rim. The tire pressure prescribed by the vehicle manufacturer is the result of intensive research and testing. In this case, first of all, the bearing capacity, depending on the tire (design / size) and pressure, is taken into account. This is followed by delicate work to determine air pressure in order to ensure the maximum level of traffic safety and driving performance with sufficient driving comfort. It is a fact that a car carries not so much a tire as air inflated into it. Too low a discharge pressure means excessive deformation of the tire, which leads to increased collapse work and which, in turn, leads to excessive heating. Scientific evidence: heating is the death of a tire. Lowering the air pressure by only 0.3 bar with forced traffic on the autobahn after just a few minutes leads to a dangerous increase in tire temperature. A loaded car and high outside temperature are additional stress factors that can cause tire death. Moreover, the defect may not appear immediately, but strike sometime later. Scientific evidence: tires have a memory. The air pressure values ​​given in the operating instructions (as well as on the fuel tank cap, glove box, door pillar) apply only to the tires supplied or offered for delivery by the vehicle manufacturer. For tires of extra-large sizes (wide-profile), other (higher) pressure indicators may be needed, information on this can be obtained from the customer service department of the respective tire manufacturer.

Lower pressure indicators compared with those offered by the car manufacturer seem to improve comfort, but this manipulation is unacceptable and hides the dangers listed above. Extremely high pressure readings are also harmful. In the supposedly sporting qualities of movement, powerful unexpected effects are hidden (in the boundary range). In addition, the tire bounces and dances on rough roads, this is a rather problematic state of movement, and the wear of the middle of the tread increases sharply. Recommendation: increase the pressure by a maximum of 0.2 bar above the prescribed.
