Toyota NADIA 1AZ-FSE. P1215 Diagnostics – Injector Control Unit Error

Toyota Nadia 1AZ-FSE diagnosis code P1215- Injector D / U circuit (EDU circuit malfunction) – malfunction / error of the injector control unit.

The car arrived with a burning banner “Check the engine”.

Customer complaints: unstable idling, power loss, increased fuel consumption.

Read DTC:

Icon * next to the fault code indicates that there is “frozen” data, the so-called freese frame .

Their analysis in this case is not required, since the malfunction is obvious and is present at the time of diagnosis: the engine is clearly “troit”.

It can be seen that there is insufficient discharge in the reservoir and almost prohibitive fuel corrections. It is bad that it is not visible which cylinder / s does not work / work inefficiently. It would be possible to use the First Look sensor to detect a defective cylinder, but in this case it would be redundant ☺

The DTC clearly indicates a problem with the Injector Amplifier Unit – EDU (Electronic Driver Unit). It is located very conveniently under the hood on the bulkhead of the engine compartment.

This DTC may occur for several reasons:

  1. Injector / nozzle failure
  2. Wiring Malfunction in ECU –EDU Circuits – Injector
  3. EDU malfunction *
  4. ECU Fault **

Let’s take turns.

Checking the integrity of the wiring from the EDU to the injectors and simultaneously checking the resistance of the injectors is conveniently carried out on the 8-pin EDU connector according to email. wiring diagram.

In this case, a circuit from an Avensis car with the same engine was used. Despite the fact that the colors of the wires do not match, the pin assignment is identical (see. Fig. Below):

The resistance of each nozzle at t 60 ° C was 6.4 ohms. Wiring from EDU to injectors OK.
But just measuring the resistance of the injectors is not enough, you need to look at the waveform of the signal with the engine running.
And here is the first “surprise” – there is no control of the nozzle of the 4th cylinder.

There was a reason to suspect a malfunction in the EDU?

Yes, of course, although in my practice I have not yet met with faulty Toyota EDUs, but Mitsubishi and Nissan very often.
But first you need to make sure that control signals for all 4 cylinders come from the engine control unit to the nozzle amplifier.

Testing with an oscilloscope showed that only 3 signals are coming in, there is no control of the 4th cylinder. It’s getting more interesting …

The next step is to verify the integrity of the wiring from ECU to EDU

The result is a faulty engine control unit.
But, before sentencing the ECU to a replacement, you can and should open it (always with the permission of the owner of the car, preferably even in his presence) and check for simple damage, for example, burnt conductors / elements, lack of moisture, etc. It’s no secret that the so-called “Fuel”.

And here is the second surprise – the ECU was already under repair, as indicated by the sticker of a workshop in N – ska.

I don’t know for what reason the control unit was under repair, but it was not carried out very carefully, the flux was not even washed off the board.

An additional soldering of the control circuit of the 4 nozzle brought a result, a signal appeared, the motor worked fine.
