My height is 185 cm, weight – 95 kg. This is a preface to further discussions on the dimensions of the machines. In addition, I am 48 years old, and this is not my first “right” car. This is so that you can mentally correct my somewhat senile views on the Japanese “iron”. Before that, I went to the Nissan Maxima for 4 years (V-shaped six with a turbine on the mechanics, front-wheel drive), but thanks to its high-speed qualities, I successfully turned this wonderful car into scrap metal. After that, having decided that it wasn’t quite rational to transport your ass on a device with a cost of more than 3,000 yeah (and there wasn’t any more at that time), but I really wanted comfort (46 years old!), I bought the 1990 Vista-free “Vista” on 35th body. All-wheel drive, on the machine, with a bunch of “bells and whistles” (sonars, spoiler, sunroof, retractable “pins” with bulbs on the dimensions, etc.), but, alas, unsuitable for speed records. This fact, as well as the fact that I have been repairing Japanese cars for more than 10 years, allows me to have a more or less objective opinion about this “perspective” (vista, English – perspective, view).
As you know, cars with the name “Vista” began to produce in August 1983. These pretty nice square cars with the body CV-10 (11) or SV-10 (12) had diesel or gasoline engines of the “C” or “S” series, respectively. Diesel engines (1C or 2C, with a volume of 1.8 l or 2.0 l, respectively) could have a turbine, and then the letter “T” was added to the name of the engine, and gasoline (1 S – ##) could be with a carburetor or with central (1 S – i) electronic injection. Only this “Whist” series included the station wagon body. The rest of the body (20s, 30s, 40s) were produced, unfortunately, by lovers of country “rest”, only in the form of “sedans”.
Since August 1986, Vista has acquired a new # V -20 body, and is popularly called the “round” one. It is on this model that the now popular injection “four” 3 S – FE has appeared. This large “soap box” was produced until July 1990 with the bodies “SV -20,21,22,25” or “CV -20”. Externally, these bodies are the same, only one has “4 WS”, the other has 4 WD, the third has a modified lining and sunroof, etc. By the way, the sunroof is a surprisingly worthless thing; in addition to noise and heat in the cabin, this contraption “steals” about 5 cm from the ceiling. As a result, the owner of this hole in the roof constantly massages his sweaty bald spot on the upholstery, but after stopping it has the ability to bend his fingers: “boys, the hatch is cool!” I’m not really exaggerating, because I myself, as mentioned above, drive a car with a sunroof. In justification, I’ll say that I didn’t install the plastic “flap” on the roof in front of the hatch even more useless thing.
As you know, Toyota Vista cars are either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, the external difference of which is only in the presence of stickers 4 WD FULL TIME. All-wheel drive “Whists” (SV-25, SV -35, SV -43, SV -55 bodies) has a permanent all-wheel drive through differentials (center and interwheels) and, to increase throughput, a center differential lock button. Moreover, this lock is automatically (for example, when increasing speed) is removed. The other part of “Whist” “4 WD FULL TIME” does not have such a button. They have a viscous coupling in the transfer case – this is such a piece of iron that “thinks” for you and, when necessary, blocks the differential. If good, of course. About whether the lock is turned on or off – you do not even know. The car rides itself and rides, regardless of whether the asphalt under the wheels or ice. A feature of all-wheel drive versions is the amazing “holding” of the road, especially noticeable in winter. I once tried to cause a skid on a snowy coast. Yes, it succeeded. From the tenth attempt. Now I know, or rather it seemed to me that the “4 WD FULL TIME” breaks off abruptly, somewhere even unexpectedly and behaves like a rear-wheel drive car in a drift.
4 WS vehicles (SV-33, SV -42 bodies) have steered rear wheels. This was done not for the convenience of parking (although parking in such a car is a fairy tale!), But for a better “holding” of the road. There, from the front steering rack, goes a thin cardan that controls the rear steering rack with electric motors. And there are also “brains” (computer) for controlling these electric motors. As a result, up to a speed of 30 km / h, the rear wheels turn when they turn the steering wheel in the opposite direction than the front wheels. The car, as it were, “folds” and the turning radius becomes “ridiculous”. From a speed of 30 km / h to 60 km / h, the rear wheels do not react to the steering wheel in any way, and we have a regular car. Well, after 60 km / h when turning the steering wheel, the car goes “crab” (that is, a little sideways). In this case, the turning radius is oh-w-what, but such a “Vista” “holds” the road in the turn exceptionally well. It’s not for nothing that they “piled” so many “extra” glands.
Since 1990, the body of the thirtieth series went. This “bloated” (“pot-bellied”) “Vista” was produced until 1994. Despite its potbelly, inside the car has almost the same interior as the “20” series. Well, maybe the ceiling is 2 cm higher. But her trunk is noticeably larger. This is especially noticeable on “all-wheel drive” cars (on the 25th and 35th bodies), where the rear gearbox significantly reduces the space for transported suitcases. The whole series could have gasoline engines 4 S – FE (injection, 1.8 liters), 3 S – FE (injection, 2.0 liters) or a 2C-T diesel engine (2.0 liters with a turbine). All-wheel drive models, like on the 20th series, could have only the most powerful 3 S – FE .
Since 1994, our beloved Asians began to “sculpt” the 40th body. The car, having found a mass of faces on its surface, became more elegant and elegant, but the trunk, alas, again slightly decreased. The dimensions of the cabin, according to subjective sensations, were not affected, all the same distance of 146 cm between the front windows does not allow you to reach the wheel, but it makes it possible to reach the left seat shift handle from your seat. With the advent of this model, the palm by the number of stolen flashlights (thieves also rated the “crystal” optics with a market value of 500 American money) smoothly moved from the thirtieth to the fortieth. For all units, the car has not changed much. No, some kind of modernization has taken place, but it happens all the time. Gradually, the distributor disappeared in the engine compartment, the high-voltage wires “lost two times”, the harnesses acquired new latches, the color (and hence the technical parameters) of the injectors changed, etc. All this happens all the time, but basically under the hood the same 3 S – FE (4 S – FE, 3 S – GE). For those who have the opportunity to “rub” diesel fuel, a more powerful diesel engine (3C-T and “abstruse” 3C-TE) with a volume of 2.2 liters has appeared. With intercooler even. Although with the old 2C-T (of course, serviceable), the car did not particularly demonstrate its “dullness” on the roads. Another remarkable feature of the 40th body is that it realized the dream of many crazy people who like the smell of diesel. “Whists” “4 WD FULL TIME” are now also diesel (CV-43 body).
An interesting paradox is associated with these bodies (30 and 40). “Vista” and “Camry” are a class higher than “Corona” and “Corona Premio” (93-95 years), on average they are larger and more powerful. Not much, but still. However, in Vladivostok these “vistopodobnye” are cheaper (500-1000 ye). This paradox became clear when they gave me a few days to steer the “pot-bellied” “Crown”. As a result, it turned out that the five of us, our entire brigade to go to the “Crown” more convenient than the “Vista”. Since 1998, talented “japas” have been releasing Vista in the 50th body. This car is much higher than previous models, has a more spacious interior (you can ride in a hat, but in a small one), all of it is fashionable (chopped) and with an “amateur” appearance, but nonetheless recognizable. When this machine first came to us a couple of years ago, its angular appearance nevertheless suggested that we had Vista. Then we read about it on the back panel. We can say that if “Vista” on the 30th body is associated with a plump woman, then the 40th body will be a girl, and the 50th will be an angular teenager. Where beauty and ugliness are very near. But in the cabin everything is a bit unexpected and beautiful. When you turn on the ignition, the dashboard display flashes and a greeting appears in English and Japanese: the car seems to be saying hello to you. After a couple of seconds, these scribbles are replaced by boring numbers, but a charge of positive emotions has already been received. In general, the impressions of the cabin are positive. This contributes to a lighter than in previous models, the range of materials used for decoration. In the fiftieth body are three types of gasoline engines – the famous “old man” 3 S – FE and the relatively little-known 3 S – FSE (D -4) and 1 ZZ – FE. In conclusion about these new cars, it can be noted that the 50th “Whists” are produced both in the form of “sedans” and in the form of capacious “station wagons” (finally.).
There is an opinion that Vista and Camry are almost identical machines. But this is generally believed only by the Far East, who constantly see the Camry with the same bodies as the Vista (# V -10, # V -20, # V -30, # V -40). Indeed, according to the aggregates and the interior, these are completely identical cars, and the appearance differs only in that the side doors of the Camry have frames, while the Vista has no frames. Well, a little different lining, lights, wings, etc. However, the guys do not take into account that there are world-famous left-handed and right-handed Camry with the SXV-10 body. There is also a Camry Gracia, Camry Prominent, Camry Scepter. And mix all this bunch of different cars with different units (but they are all “Camry”!) With “Whists”? It is unlikely that this will be logical.
Of the special problems that are inherent mainly in Vista cars (and Camry cars with the same bodies), the following can be noted.
Propeller shaft howl. Our (“4 WD FULL TIME”) car has a very long (perhaps the longest among passenger cars) cardan shaft. And now, only in winter, after reaching a speed of 50-60 km / h, the shaft begins to “sing”. This howl lasts 10 to 20 minutes and, after warming up the outboard bearings (and gears), disappears. Until the next frosty morning. As soon as the air temperature rises to at least –5 degrees, this “musical” accompaniment disappears. This phenomenon is observed by many owners of “Vist” in 25 and 35 bodies. And not one year, without visible tendencies to increase. This allows us to hope that this will continue to be so. Without noticeable aspirations to strengthen the defect. And urgently changing bearings is not necessary.
Automatic transmissions of the 540th series, which are installed on our favorite car, according to the method of lubrication, come in 2 versions. With separate lubrication and combined. In both versions, there are two drain plugs: in the automatic transmission pan and in the main gear case. But if it is enough, when changing the oil, to fill the entire volume of oil through the dipstick shaft in the box with combined lubricant, then in an automatic transmission with separate lubrication, it is necessary to add more oil through the stopper of the test hole of the main transmission case. This feature of the 540 series must be considered when servicing Vista vehicles. Otherwise, the main gear will be forced to work without lubrication, naturally, not for long.
Body vibration Right on the body (front on the engine) engine mount has silicone filler. If the car starts to remove the gearbox (for some reason), without removing the engine, then during this work the engine will hang on one pillow for some time in a skewed state. After the repair is completed, there will be no changes in the behavior of the machine. But after a few weeks (maybe even months), vibration from the engine will appear on the body. It is worth replacing this “silicone” support (outwardly, absolutely serviceable), the vibration disappears. This defect is found mainly in Vist (and in Camry with the same bodies) and very rarely in other front-wheel drive cars (with the same “silicone” supports). Unfortunately, a number of cases of failure of this support and without manipulation of the gearbox were noted. Old age, however …
The steering column of my “Vista” when it is removed the ignition key itself leans up. Pretty convenient feature. You can “flop” on a driver’s seat in a big way. And just a couple of days later I got used to it. But here a situation arose when I, without turning off the engine, got out and got into the car again.
